From Paracelsus to Newton
Charles Webster
The alchemist and physician known as Paracelsus (1493–1541) appears to have dwelt in a completely different intellectual world from Sir Isaac Newton (1642–1727). Newton's work lies in the lofty era of the Enlightenment and the modern world, while that of the enigmatic Paracelsus conjures up the superstitious lore of the Dark Ages. The rise of science and the decline of magic unfolded over many generations, and as this fascinating book shows, there existed remarkable elements of continuity between the world views of the early sixteenth and late seventeenth centuries. The essays contained in this volume constitute a slightly modified version of the Eddington Lectures, delivered at Cambridge in the autumn of 1980. In this masterly series of discourses, Charles Webster explores three test cases relating to prophecy, spiritual magic, and demonic magic. Focusing on evidence from Germany at the time of the Reformation and from England during the Restoration, these essays form a more balanced historical perspective on the epistemological shift that occurred between the ages of Paracelsus and Newton. They propose a view of the Scientific Revolution as a diverse phenomenon, the result of a dynamic interplay of forces emanating from many different directions, and all contributing to the process of creativity and change. 20 black-and-white illustrations. Introduction. Notes to each chapter.

Physik des Golfspiels. Mit Newton zum Tee
Ivan Egry
Richtig hei?t in diesem Fall: physikalisch.
Heat Transfer to Non-Newtonian Fluids
Aroon Shenoy
This book has been written with the idea of providing the fundamentals for those who are interested in the field of heat transfer to non-Newtonian uids. It is well recognized that non-Newtonian fluids are encountered in a number of transport processes and estimation of the heat transfer characteristics in the presence of these fl uids requires analysis of equations that are far more complex than those encountered for Newtonian fl uids. A deliberate effort has be made to demonstrate the methods of simplication of the complex equations and to put forth analytical expressions for the various heat transfer situations in as vivid manner as possible. The book covers a broad range of topics from forced, naturaland mixed convection without and with porous media. Laminaras well as turbulent flow heat transfer to non-Newtonian fluids have been treated and the criterion for transition from laminar toturbulent fl ow for natural convection has been established. The heat transfer characteristics of non-Newtonian fl uids from inelastic power-law fluids to viscoelastic second-order fluids and mildly elastic drag reducing fl uids are covered. This book can serve the needs of undergraduates, graduates and industry personnel from the fields of chemical engineering, material science and engineering, mechanical engineering and polymer engineering.

Out of the Shadow of a Giant: How Newton Stood on the Shoulders of Hooke and Halley
John Gribbin
What if Isaac Newton had never lived? Robert Hooke and Edmond Halley, whose place in history has been overshadowed by the giant figure of Newton, were pioneering scientists within their own right, and instrumental in establishing the Royal Society.Whilst Newton is widely regarded as one of the greatest scientists of all time, and the father of the English scientific revolution, John and Mary Gribbin uncover the fascinating story of Robert Hooke and Edmond Halley, whose scientific achievements neatly embrace the hundred years or so during which science as we know it became established in Britain. They argue persuasively that even without Newton science in Britain would have made a great leap forward in the second half of the seventeenth century, headed by two extraordinary men, Hooke and Halley.
